Intimacy and Faithfulness

Last June 11, 2004, Reuben MorganFYI came here in the Philippines to give a seminar about Praise and Worship leading. As a whole, the entire session gives the whole point and the goal of a Praise and Worship ministry. After the seminar, we were given tips and how-to's on how to play the instruments and turn ourselves into a great army of musicians ministering people to praise and worship God. Note that I've haven't arranged my notes during the seminar - you might find some of the ideas incoherent. Also I have added personal insights that might help. May God bless you with this.
Reuben Morgan is a pastor, worship leader, composer, musician of Hillsong Music Australia. He also leads the church's auxilliary Youth P&W Team, United

--> In any ministry, Jesus is the originator. Without the love for God and for the church, all our works will result to nothing.

The Vine and the Branches (John 15:1-17 NIV)

1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other.

Being intimate with God.
- God would rather be with you than please Him with your good works.
- having a personal relationship with God (the bottomline of it all)

It is impt WHY we do WHAT we do!!!
- Why I am involved in music ministry?
music- a tool of God for conveying His love for His people.

"There are walls surrounding us that seem so hard to conquer. With these wall we become hindered. Ask for God's healing in your life so he can your wounds and so that you can minister with Him not out of inclination but with your love for God and serving the church"

The Walls of Jericho (Joshua 1:1-21 NIV)

1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in."

6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant of the LORD and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it." 7 And he ordered the people, "Advance! March around the city, with the armed guard going ahead of the ark of the LORD."

8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the LORD went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the LORD's covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the people, "Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!" 11 So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. Then the people returned to camp and spent the night there.

12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the LORD and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the people, "Shout! For the LORD has given you the city! 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted [a] to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute [b] and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the LORD and must go into his treasury."

20 When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city. 21 They devoted the city to the LORD and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

Conquering these walls require and is found in healing and God's salvation.

Do not focus on problems, focus to God cause He has given us the VICTORY to overcome it.

Sing regardless of your circumstances.

Reuben Morgan: Sing regardless of the circumstance

Paul and Silas in Prison (Acts 16:25-31 NIV)

25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"

29The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

31They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."

- Why do we SING?
- not for performance, not for SHOW but 4 service to the CHURCH and so that people will be healed in Jesus' name.

MAKING THE PRAISE and WORSHIP BAND

A) The elements of Groove.

1) Pulse - refers to the time element, metronomic sound
- music produced is patterned of definite time element
- mostly used for background (bass guitars)

2) Forward Motion - music that brings the song into motion.
- it should make the people moving (clapping, dancing). It should make people really grooving and singing
- i.e. (distinct song intros like intro in All Things are Possible)

3) Unity - a band is composed of different entities (ie Hillsong - song leader, back up song leaders, background choir, musicians, percussionists)
- it is important for them to sound as one without having the effect of sounding SCATTERED and CONGESTED.
- each musical instrument is played to harmonize/complement with each other to effectively play the song. It does not mean if you knew a certain stylistics, u can incorporate with the band. If it makes the music too congested then don't use that stylistic.

4) Dynamics - the most important ELEMENT because it is the soul of the music. It makes the people "feel" the song.
- for song leaders, it means when to soften or quiet or make your voice loud and powerful to emphasize "moods" of the song. In addition it is also having the proper diction and PRONUNCIATION of words when to sing fast or slow.
- for instrumentalists - same with loudness or softness at the exact time it is necessary to do that. With dyanamics it also implies how each instrumentalists (ie keyboardists, guitarists, drummers) communicate to each other when to emphasize each.

HAVE A GOOD CHRISTIAN RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH MEMBER OF THE BAND AND STRENGTHEN EACH PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. IT IS THE BOTTOMLINE OF IT ALL.
